Lectures and courses in SS 2004
Vorlesung: Mechanismen des Verhaltens
Lehrveranstalter: Mark Bee, Georg Klump
Termin: Donnerstag 14h-16h
Raum: W4-1-162
Contents
The lecture provides an introduction to the mechanisms controlling animal behaviour. This field of
ethology is called "Neuroethology". Topics of the lecture are, for example, the mechanisms of
perception, the generation of motor programs, learning, orientation and navigation. The lecture
will be given in English.

Vorlesung: Entwicklungsbiologie
Lehrveranstalter: Georg Klump, Silke Rinkwitz
Termin: Dienstag 12h-14h
Raum: W3-1-161
Contents
The lecture provides an introduction to the developmental biology of animals. Starting with a
description of the molecular mechanisms operating after the egg has been fertilized, the structural
development of the vertebrate and invertebrate embryo is discussed. Special emphasis will be given
to new findings of cell biology and molecular biology. The lecture also includes the topics of growth
and regeneration. It will conclude with a treatment of the development of behaviour.

Vorlesung: Evolution
Lehrveranstalter: Georg Klump, Horst Schminke
Termin: Montag 15h-16h und Donnerstag 13h-14h
Raum: W4-1-162
Contents
The lecture provides an introduction to the field of evolutionary biology. Examples of evolutionary
processes will be taken from botany and zoology. Starting with a description of inter-individual
variation, the mechanisms of selection, speciation and the concept of a species will be discussed.
Special emphasis will be given to topics of population genetics. The lecture will describe methods
applied in reconstructing the phylogenetic tree and discuss the species' distribution in time and
space (Biogeography). The developments of evolutionary theory will also be explained in the historical
context.

Vertiefungspraktikum Immunologie
Lehrveranstalter: Peter Jaros, Werner Luttmann
Vorbesprechung: 24.04.2003, W4-1-172, 16 Uhr
Praktikum: ganztägig 07.07 - 18.07.2003, W4-0-107
Contents
The laboratory course on Immunology allows students to become acquainted with several immunological
research areas and their methods. Besides the isolation of immunocompetent cells, their characterization
and cell culture, proliferation activity and blastula transformation are induced and investigated.
Different receptors and interleukines are amplified by polymerase chain reaction and determined
electrophoretically or using Western Blot. Differentiated blood typing, phenotyping, and
immunohistochemical techniques are further topics of the laboratory course. Additionally, immunological
detection methods such as ELISA and RIA are treated. Participation in the Immunology Seminar is the
precondition for admission to the laboratory course.

Immunologisches Seminar
Lehrveranstalter: Peter Jaros, Werner Luttmann
Termin: Donnerstag 16h-18h
Raum: W4-1-172
Contents
In order to complete the lectures on Immunology and to reinforce certain areas treated in the laboratory
course in more detail, papers are to be held during the seminar the topics of which are discussed by the
participants.

Vertiefungspraktikum Informationsverarbeitung und Verhalten
Lehrveranstalter: Thomas Friedl, Georg Klump, Ulrike Langemann
Vorbesprechung: 02.02.2004, W4-0-098, 13.00 Uhr
Praktikum: 03.05. - 14.05. 2004
Contents
Students are provided with an introduction to the current field of research of the Zoophysiology & Behaviour
group at Oldenburg university (bioacoustics of frog calling, auditory perceptual mechanisms of birds in
natural conditions, nest-building behaviour in weaver birds).
Please send an email to Prof. Klump if you want to take part in the course.

Blockseminar Informationsverarbeitung und Verhalten
Lehrveranstalter: Thomas Friedl, Georg Klump, Ulrike Langemann
Termin: n. V.
Raum: W4-0-098
Contents
The journal club discusses recent publications in the field of neural processing and behaviour
relating to the projects in the practical "Information Processing and Behaviour".

Fortgeschrittenenpraktikum Ethologie
Lehrveranstalter: Georg Klump, Ulrike Langemann
Vorbesprechung: 02.02.2004, W4-0-098, 12.00 Uhr
Praktikum: 4 Wochen ganztägig von 05.04. - 30.04.2004
Contents
The course introduces students to ethological methods using model systems for the study of behaviour.
It is composed of three parts: (1) Learning in bumble bees will be investigated in experiments in the lab.
(2) In a field study the students learn how to
conduct and analyse bioacoustic playback studies. The goal is to understand bird auditory perception
in the natural acoustic environment. (3) In a lab course the students are introduced to principles of
acoustic measurements and to the classification of animal sounds. Discussion of relevant literature
complements the practical work. Participation in the course on the application of statistical methods
in neurobiology and behaviour (see below) is recommended.

Seminar: Aktuelle Themen der Verhaltensbiologie
Lehrveranstalter: Mark Bee, Thomas Friedl, Georg Klump, Ulrike Langemann
Termin: Donnerstag 14h-16h, Raum W4-0-098
Contents
This journal club discusses recently published articles in the field of animal behaviour. Sources are
journals such as Nature, Science, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Animal Behaviour, Behavioral Ecology,
Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology, Behaviour, and Ethology.

Übungen zur statistischen Analyse in Neurobiologie und Verhalten
Lehrveranstalter: Thomas Friedl, Georg Klump, Ulrike Langemann
Termin: Blockveranstaltung, 30.03 bis 02.04, ganztägig, Beginn jeweils 9 Uhr c.t.
Raum: W4-1-162
Contents
The course provides an introduction to the methods of descriptive statistics and inference statistics.
Predominantly, non-parametric procedures will be introduced. In the practical part the students will
learn to apply the package SPSS for data analysis. Finally, topics of experimental design will be
